NJ Budget Passed with Flying Colors for Mental Health Consumers

We are pleased to announce that in July 2006, Governor Corzine signed the Fiscal Year 2007 budget. With the help of many mental health advocates we achieved a near total victory for mental health. We secured 31 million dollars for community services and 10 million dollars for supportive housing which will allow consumers who are ready to move out of state psychiatric hospitals, and for consumers who live in the community who need safe supportive housing. We also got an increase in funding for state psychiatric hospitals of 6.7 million dollars .We were successful in fighting against Medicaid co-pays, which would have had a negative impact on consumers. We defeated a forced prior authorization for psychotropic medications and a proposal that would have allowed Medicaid to bulk purchase medications including mental health medications. As mental health advocates we need to celebrate our successes and recognize the importance of working in coalition with others.
